Rod Alave is set to take the stage at Power Slap XI, squaring off against Cole Young in Saudi Arabia on January 30th. We caught up with the charismatic striker to discuss his journey, preparation, and mindset as he prepares to deliver an unforgettable performance.
Living the Dream
For Rod Alave, competing at Power Slap XI is more than just a fight—it’s a dream come true.
“Dude, it’s everything I wanted and more,” Rod shared with enthusiasm. “I was hoping they’d bring me back after I lost the bands, and now I’m on the number six card. Let’s go!”
Rod is no stranger to big moments, having competed at Power Slap X in Las Vegas. This time, he’s traveling across the globe to perform in front of a live audience in Saudi Arabia—a testament to the sport’s growing popularity and the investment being made in its athletes.
Training Like Never Before
Known for his laid-back and free-spirited personality, Rod admits he’s stepped up his training ahead of this fight.
“Man, I actually started taking it pretty seriously,” he said. “I’ve been hitting the gym again, and I’m about fifteen pounds heavier than I was on the show. That’s like ten percent more power. I think it’s going to show.”
Rod’s newfound dedication reflects a shift in his approach to the sport. What started as a casual venture inspired by a single TikTok clip has evolved into something much bigger.
“I had no idea how big this sport was when I started,” Rod confessed. “Now I’m falling in love with it. It’s like nothing I’ve ever done before—modern-day gladiator stuff. You go up there, you think you’re about to die, and it’s crazy.”
Respect for the Opponent
When it comes to his upcoming opponent, Cole Young, Rod isn’t taking him lightly.
“I’ve watched every single fight of his,” Rod said. “He’s got a chin on him—he’s taken fourteen or fifteen slaps and hasn’t dropped once. He’s gone to a draw with Blackburn and only lost to top guys like Muniz and Jewel. But when I knock him out, it’s going to add to my resume.”
Despite his confidence, Rod spoke with admiration for Cole’s resilience and the challenges he’s faced outside the ring.
“Cole’s got a real story, and I feel for the guy,” Rod admitted. “But unfortunately, he’s my opponent. After I win, I’m going to pray for him and his family. He seems like a great guy, but on fight day, I’m coming to kill him—and I know he’s coming to kill me too.”
Driven by Stories
For Rod, fighting isn’t just about the rankings or the paycheck—it’s about creating memories and writing stories.
“A lot of guys do it for the money, and don’t get me wrong, the money’s nice,” Rod explained. “But I’m here to create stories. Stories are what touch people and impact lives. I’m trying to express my story to the world.”
Rod’s journey has been anything but conventional. From dropping out of college to avoid the mundane life of a cubicle job, he’s forged his own path—one filled with risks, adventure, and a relentless pursuit of his dreams.
“I’m one of those people who think you can have your cake and eat it too,” he said. “If you’re confident and certain in your reality, it’ll happen.”
Mentors and Guidance
Rod credits several key figures in Power Slap for helping him grow as a fighter.
“Pono is like a father figure to all of us,” he said. “He helped me recover from a shoulder injury that almost forced me to drop out of a fight. Muniz has also been great with tips on defense, even though we’re in the same weight class. And The Crazy Hawaiian—he’s a real teacher. He’s open about sharing his techniques, which is rare in this sport.”
The Final Word
As Rod prepares to face Cole Young, he’s bringing a mix of respect, determination, and his signature confidence to the table.
“Cole, you seem like a great guy, and this is going to be a war,” Rod said in a message to his opponent. “Let’s create a show, keep it clean, and put on a performance for the fans. But come ready, because I’m coming to kill you.”
With his newfound dedication, a heavier frame, and a mindset fueled by passion, Rod Alave is ready to make his mark at Power Slap XI. Can he deliver the knockout he’s predicting? The stage is set for an epic clash on January 30th.
