One of the most talked-about prospects to come out of the first-ever Power Slap Combine Training Camp in Las Vegas is Austin Dunning — and it’s easy to see why. Standing at a towering 6’6” and weighing in near the lightweight class, Dunning is a physical anomaly who’s now caught the attention of coaches, fans, and fellow strikers alike.

Slap News caught up with Austin for his first post-Combine interview, and he broke down his journey, mindset, and what’s next if the call comes from Power Slap brass.

From the Stage to the Slap Table

Dunning admits he comes to Power Slap without a traditional combat sports background — instead, his roots lie in football, baseball, basketball, and the performing arts.

“I don’t really have any combat sport background,” said Dunning. “But I know what I’m signing up for. It takes a lot to get up in front of people and be willing to get smacked.”

That comfort with the spotlight may come from another unexpected source: music. Dunning performs as a singer and rapper under the name AJ the Kid, available on all streaming platforms.

“Being able to perform on stage definitely gives you confidence. It’s going to help when it’s time to get up there at the table.”

Standing Tall Among the Greats

Dunning made waves during the Combine for his face-off with reigning welterweight champion Robert Trujillo — a moment that sparked plenty of buzz online due to the dramatic height difference.

“That was it. For sure there’s going to be some controversy behind that one,” Dunning laughed. “Over a foot difference between us.”

Trujillo, along with fellow Power Slap legends Anthony “Babyface” Blackburn and Wolverine, were on-hand to coach the new prospects and pass down valuable technical knowledge.

“It was an honor to have them around,” said Dunning. “They’re making sure we understand technique, safety, and professionalism. That means everything for growing this sport.”

Inspired by DeFrank, Driven by Legacy

Dunning’s path to Power Slap wasn’t random — he credits his friend Anthony “King” DeFrank, currently ranked in the top five, with helping inspire him to join the Combine.

“I saw him doing his thing. Now I want to build my own legacy,” said Dunning.

While they may be entering the same division, Dunning is focused on carving his own path.

The Road Ahead

Though no contracts have been confirmed as of yet, Dunning is crystal clear on what’s next if the phone rings:

“Train. Train. Train,” he said. “From this moment forward, I just need to be ready for that call.”
