March 7 | Fontainebleau, Las Vegas
Dakota McGregor may not have walked away with the Power Slap welterweight title, but his warrior spirit and durability were on full display at Power Slap XII. Going the full five-round distance with Robert Trujillo, McGregor proved why he deserved to be in the title picture—and why he still belongs there.
“Feels good, honestly,” McGregor said post-fight. “My hand’s a little bruised up, my face is swollen, but I feel good. I feel real good.”
A Battle That Went the Distance
Going into the fight, both McGregor and Trujillo predicted a third-round finish. Instead, McGregor became the first opponent to take Trujillo all five rounds.
“I wasn’t really expecting it to go five rounds,” McGregor admitted. “But at the same time, I know I’m tough, and I’m not willing to give up.”
For McGregor, the fight solidified his toughness and chin, but there’s no doubt about Trujillo’s power.
“Yeah, that’s definitely the hardest I’ve ever been hit,” McGregor said.
The First Canadian to Fight for a Title
Despite the loss, McGregor made history as the first Canadian to fight for a Power Slap championship. The support back home has been overwhelming.
“It’s been unbelievable,” he said. “I haven’t been out too much yet. Just picked up my kids, took them home, and been taking care of the swelling. But I can only imagine what it’s going to be like in the next week.”
Medical Suspension & Post-Fight Reactions
McGregor confirmed that he received a medical suspension following the fight.
“Yeah, I got a medical suspension. Nothing too crazy. I think 30 days is the minimum when you go five rounds.”
After the fight, McGregor made his way to the Highlands Room for the post-event gathering but didn’t stay long.
“I just came through, saw everyone, said hi to Dana real quick, and then dipped,” he said.
As for his fellow strikers? Nothing but respect and admiration.
“Everyone was super supportive, telling me to keep my head high. It was an amazing performance for my first live fight.”
Looking Back – Any Regrets?
Now that he’s had time to reflect, is there anything McGregor would’ve done differently?
“Yeah, I truly feel like I could have hit him harder,” he admitted. “There were things about my fight camp that could have changed the outcome. But no excuses—Robert was the better man that night.”
McGregor also had to watch his close friend Anthony DeFrank suffer a brutal KO loss to Riley Montoya on the same night.
“Hard to watch, man. You never want to see that happen to anyone—especially when you like the guy on the other side. But at the end of the day, we all sign up for this. That easily could’ve been me.”
Interestingly, Montoya made it clear he has no interest in fighting McGregor.
“I saw his post-fight interview with Slap News,” McGregor said. “He wants nothing to do with me. I love his attitude.”
What’s Next for McGregor?
🔹 A rematch with Trujillo?
🔹 A fight with DeFrank?
🔹 A potential showdown with Boisvert if he returns?
McGregor made it clear—his #1 priority is getting that belt.
“I know a lot of people might not agree, but I’d like the rematch,” he stated. “I’m the only guy to take him five rounds. I want to see him defend that title. Give me a solid two-month camp, and I think things could be different.”
However, he’s not turning down any challenge.
“Whoever they throw at me, I’m taking their head off. I know I’m going to hold that belt someday—that’s the goal.”
Final Thoughts
Dakota McGregor didn’t get the win at Power Slap XII, but he left with respect, experience, and an even bigger chip on his shoulder.
Now, he’s hungry for redemption.
“I’ll be back. Live this time.”
